Withania Somnifera Dunal, also known as Indian ginseng and Winter cherry in English and Ashwagandha in Hindi, is a plant of the Solanaceae family. Ashwagandha plant extract has several bio-active compounds used to treat several diseases, namely amnesia, arthritis, impotence, anxiety and cardiovascular diseases and others.

It is also used as a general tonic to improve the overall health and longevity. Ashwagandha is believed to prevent diseases in individuals of different age group and with varied health conditions.
 
It is also useful in stress, epilepsy, and neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disorders and contributes to the general wellbeing of the individual.

In Ayurvedic medical system Withania somnifera or Ashwagandha is used for the treatment of physical weakness due to illness, skinniness, impotence and premature ageing, pain, infection, skin diseases, inflammation, gastrointestinal disorders, epilepsy, and rheumatism. It is also used as a general tonic for the improvement of libido, liver health, mental state, cancer, heart disease, and the immune system.

Ashwagandha is extremely useful in treating joint pain. It lowers the swelling and stiffness and is known for its anti -inflammatory properties. It is a great choice in treating depression with anxiety and panic, insomnia, heavy bleeding, exhaustion andstress. It is also used for enhancing memory and learning, and for malnutrition and anaemia.

Ashwagandha is also applied to the skin for curing wounds, backache, and hemiplegia (one-sided paralysis).

It lowers blood pressure, cholesterol and is extremely effective in preventing the formation of stress induced ulcers.
 
Ashwagandha is believed to be safe if consumed for a short-term, however it might cause various ill effects if taken longer than advised by a medical practitioner. Large doses may even induce upset stomach, diarrhoea and vomiting. Pregnant woman should avoid the usage of Ashwagandha as it may cause miscarriage. The herb may even slow down the central nervous system after surgery;hence it is best to stop its use.
